I was glad to return to Oakland Gyros after many many years. I haven't lived in Milwaukee in some time. Had never been to anything but the east side location.
Was getting a takeout order for my family. We each were getting a different entree.
First thing I noticed was that they had a special for Saganaki for $6.89. I don't think it is on the normal menu. As this is one of my favorite things in the world, it was a must try! After ordering, I switched to eat this right away, which was a wise choice, it's much better nearly still on fire and sizzling. As good as I've ever had. Try it!
Athenian Chicken - about $10 - my least favorite of the entrees, but my family said it wS their favorite. To each her own.
Chicken shishkebab (spelling?!) - about $10 - so good! Delicious, tender, well spiced.
Gyro - about $10 - i love this! Not many places can do it better. Thin sliced Milwaukee style onions. Tomatoes. Delicious tzaki (spelling?!) sauce.
Each entree comes with fries, rice, or salad. I only tried the fries, and they didn't travel well. Definitely forgot that you have to eat fries food right away. Also comes with a nice cube of feta and 3 Mediterranean olives. The portions are simply rediculously generous for the price. I ate the most of my family and still had half a meal leftover. Most of us couldn't finish even half. So think about a $5 delicious meal!
Staff was a bit cold, but were efficient and got the order right. Restaurant was clean and quite busy for it being an oddball date and time. I'm sure during peak times they get quite packed.
Looking forward to making this one a regular rotation spot on my Milwaukee visits. -

We were close by getting our Global Entry done and needed a quick bite. Bypassing the typical chains, stopped in here after seeing the favorable rating.
Food: Had the gyro combo, which was excellent and plenty of meat. Wife had the chicken kabob sandwich, which she enjoyed as well. Similar to the gyro, there was plenty of protein on the pita. My only comment is that the chicken was not a true kabob and not cooked over a fire on a spear. The kabob was basically a diced chicken breast.
Service/Other: Plenty to choose from, but shame on me for not paying attention. Given the huge selection, I didn't notice that the combo was a sandwich, fries and a drink. Had I paid for attention, I would have gotten the platter and drink. That said, food was very good and came out relatively quickly. I really enjoyed that they provide a tzaziki bottle with every order. There is nothing pleasant about getting the stink eye, when asking for more at some places. Not here! These guys do it right!
Overall; Highly recommend this place, already did so to a co-worker. When in the area, will stop here again! -

Ugh. This place always sounds like a good idea and then I regret it. Kind of like champagne. Nice until it's not nice at all.
It's always so sad when two different locations of the same business offer a completely different experience. I frequent both the Oakland Gyros on Oakland & Locust and the newer location on Layton Avenue. Layton Avenue has a drive thru, so if it's winter and you left your house in flip flops or you just don't want to put a bra on the drive thru is a nice option to have. I'm here to tell you just go ahead and put your boots and bra on, skip the drive thru and take the time to go to Oakland and Locust.
Why? Every single time I go to Oakland and Locust I get great customer service. Every single time. And every time I go to Layton it's entirely different. It feels like a business that doesn't value customers and takes them for granted. Whereas, Oakland staff will remember you, say hello, go the extra to provide a good experience.
Trust me. It's worth it. Just put your bra on because honey Layton Avenue will have you leaving the drive thru in a bad little attitude. Ohh, and often getting your order incorrect, overcooking your beef, when they goof up they don't want to rectify the situation but argue instead.
Good customer service really makes a big difference. -

Everytime we visit Milwaukee we have to stop for Greek food. They are blessed with some of the best options in the country. Oakland Gyros was one of the places we grew up on. My wife remembers eating at the original location as soon as she was eating solid food. Made to order, quick service, clean lobby, reasonable pricing, what more could you ask for? Well, if I could ask for one thing, it would be the recipe for the Athenian half chicken. That is my all-time favorite dish!
